Grounding off George Town

Mon Nov 28 09:38:58 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Saga" ran aground on coral reefs on Nov 25, 2016, at 6 a.m. while leaving George Town, Cayman Islands, after cargo operations. As she was maneuvering away from the dock, she got it into the shallows at the northern area of the reef formation just off the coast where the Paradise restaurant and the Eden Rock dive center are located. The vessel was refloated with the help of a tug on Nov 26, returned to George Town and was detained until completing surveys on reefs damages. Chris Bodden, manager at Paradise Snorkel and Diving, went out to inspect the damage on Nov 26 and 27 and took underwater videos. Damage was said to be significant with large chunks broken off. Department of Environment crews made a quick check of the area on Nov 26 and were due to go out again on Nov 29 for a more in-depth survey.
