Allision on the Moselle

Fri Oct 21 16:51:36 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Oct 21, 2016, at 2 a.m., the Belgian barge "Baroda", 3237 ts (EU-No.: 02328749), coming from Mertert with a cargo of containers, slammed into the passenger ships "Gräfin Loretta" and "Moselkönigin" due to a rudder failure near the Bernkastel Bridge on the Moselle. Both passenger ships as well as the piers at which they were berthed suffered significant damage. The cause of the allision was a failure of the rudder hydraulic so that the barge could no longer be manoevered and got stuck at the Kueser shore. After the barge was pulled out by another ship, the rudder gear needed to be repaired.
