Pirate sentenced to 12 years in jail
The district court Osnabrück sentenced a Somali pirate to 12 years in jail for his involvement n the hijack of the "Marida Marguerite". The man only had admitted to have been a drug dealer during the eight-month hijack of the "Marida Marguerite" in 2010/11 and having been a guard of the crew during that time. But the court was sure that the man had played a leading role in the hijack. The man had requested for asylum in Germany in April 2012 and was arrested in Gießen.
Hijacker arrested as asylum seeker in Germany
A Somalin hijacker of the "Marida Marguerite" has applied for asylum in Germany under a false name and was arrested after a routine check of his fingerprints which showed he was a ship hijacker. A warrant was issued against him. The ship was hijacked off the Horn of Africa in 2010 with a crew of 22. After payment of 4.2 million Euro ransom they had been released.
Somali pirate negotiator receives 12 life sentences in U.S. court
A Somali man who acted as a ransom negotiator for pirates who seized an American yacht last year and killed four American hostages was sentenced on Monday, August 13, 2012 by a U.S. federal judge to serve 12 life sentences. Mohammad Shibin was convicted in April on 15 charges including piracy, hostage taking, kidnapping and conspiracy. Shibin also served as a ransom negotiator for pirates who seized the M/V Marida Marguerite in 2010. The German-owned vessel had a crew of 22 men who were held hostage for seven months starting in May 2010 and reported being tortured.
