GLOBAL STAR 8800767

Arrived Alang for scrapping

Worst ship ever defied detention order

Thu Jan 19 12:32:57 CET 2012 Timsen

The "Global Star" which inspectors described as the worst ship they had ever seen left Weymouth Bay despite being told to stay put. It crawled in to Weymouth Bay low of fuel but the captain was unable to pay for a top up but the ship did refuel. But to run out of fuel is a major non-conformity and the ship was subject to Port State Control. The "Global Star" was given a detention order but it jumped that order and has continued on its journey. It is believed the ship left the bay early on Jan 15 morning. Because the ship has been given detention orders from other ports in the past, it will be banned from any future visits to ports in Europe. But as was heading to be scrapped, the crew probably took the decision that it didn’t matter. 14 crew members were on board the vessel when it left the bay.

Tanker ran out of fuel

Sat Jan 14 13:54:55 CET 2012 Timsen

The "Global Star" tanker was forced to anchor off Weymouth after running out of fuel on Jan 11, 2012, en route to Alang scrap beach. The vessel has 14 Russian crew members onboard. It got as far as Portland before running out of fuel and crawled into Weymouth Bay. It was believed initially the captain was unable to pay for fuel and the ship had docked whilst awaiting funds. Funds for fuel have now been cleared and the vessel went into bunkering anchorage at Portland Port. A Maritime Coastguard Agency surveyor went aboard before refuelling to carry out a statutory inspection. The tanker was expected to leave the harbour after refuelling was completed.
