Cleanup of diesel spill completed

Tue Oct 06 11:11:51 CEST 2015 Timsen

The unified command composed of the Coast Guard, Oregon State Department of Environmental Quality, Washington State Department of Ecology and responsible party completed the cleanup of diesel fuel spilled near Pier 1 of the Port of Astoria on Oct 4 after the "Global Gold" a 565-foot Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier spilled 1,100 gallons of diesel fuel into the Columbia River in an allision with the pier on Oct 1. Incident Management Division investigators from Coast Guard Sector Columbia River demobilized the cleanup contractors on scene at Pier 1 in the morning. All hard containment boom was removed from around the ship on Oct 3 night and absorbent boom was removed on Oct 4. The "Global Gold" had a soft patch in place on the damaged section of the hull, and was not taking on water. All the diesel fuel was cleaned up or it dissipitated. The investigation phase of the response was still on-going and the "Global Gold" has not been cleared to take on a load or move from the pier. The ship has submitted a vessel repair plan to the captain of the port that included having the repairs completed at Pier 1.

Unified comand responding to oil spill

Sat Oct 03 19:05:45 CEST 2015 Timsen

A unified command composed of the U.S. Coast Guard, Oregon State Department of Environmental Quality, Washington State Department of Ecology and responsible party was established in response to the diesel fuel discharge from the "Global Gold" at Pier 1 in Astoria on Oct 2, 2015. An over-flight conducted by an MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria at 9 a.m., confirmed that the spill was contained within the boom surrounding the vessel and pier. Once the leak was secured, the vessel's engineer sounded the ship's tank and Coast Guard Incident Management investigators determined a maximum discharge of 1,100 gallons had occurred. At 12:55 a.m., Port of Astoria personnel reported to Coast Guard Sector Columbia River that the ship had allided with Pier 1 in the Port of Astoria, causing a 4-foot by 8-inch gash in the port side of the hull approximately 30 feet from the stern. Clean Rivers Cooperative was mobilized and deployed boom around the vessel and pier by 3:30 a.m. The vessel's crew applied absorbent pads to the small affected area of land at the end of Pier 1. The vessel was scheduled to load lumber in the Port of Astoria for the next few days, and the vessel will be detained at its current location until repairs can be made. Bulk Carrier Spills Diesel in Oregon After Hitting Pier

Sat Oct 03 10:44:33 CEST 2015 arnekiel

Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier spilled over 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel after alliding with a pier in Astoria, Oregon early Friday. The U.S. Coast Guard says it was alerted at approximately 12:55 a.m. that the 565-foot Global Gold allided with Pier 1 in the Port of Astoria, causing a 4-foot by 8-inch gash in the port side of the hull towards the stern. By 3:30 a.m., the Clean Rivers Cooperative was mobilized and deployed boom around the vessel and pier. The vessel’s crew also applied oil-absorbent pads to a small area of land affected by the spill at the end of the pier. Once the leak was secured, the vessel’s engineer and Coast Guard crews determined that a maximum 1,100 gallons had spilled. A unified command has been established and is composed of the U.S. Coast Guard, Oregon State Department of Environmental Quality and the Washington State Department of Ecology, as well as the responsible party. A Coast Guard over-flight conducted by at 9 a.m. Friday confirmed that the spill was contained within the boom surrounding the vessel and pier. “The quick response and notification of proper authorities by the crew of the M/V Global Gold prevented this spill from becoming a much more serious situation,” said Chief Petty Officer Brad Bennett, a pollution investigator with U.S. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. “The unified command was established to deploy a safe and timely response to mitigate environmental damage, and this is a collaborative process with the responsible party, both states and the federal government.” The vessel was scheduled to load lumber in the Port of Astoria for the next few days, and the vessel will be detained at its current location until repairs can be made. The cause of the allision and ensuing spill is under investigation. https://gcaptain.com/bulk-carrier-spills-diesel-fuel-in-astoria-after-allision/#.Vg-VUt-vG9I
