Ferry suffered engine breakdown

Thu Nov 14 10:27:15 CET 2024 Timsen

On the afternoon of Nov 13, 2024, the 'Giraglia', which connects Santa Teresa Gallura with Bonifacio, suffered an engine failure at the berth in Santa Teresa di Gallura. The ferry will be out of service for several days. There was no replacement ship provided for by the territorial continuity agreement, because the 'Ichnusa' has not been operating since Oct 31 because the seasonal agreement expired, and entered a shipyard for maintenance work. During the entire tourist season, the 'Ichnusa' had made up for continuous breakdowns of the 'Giraglia' There have been numerous protests from those who were unable to return home and had to rent boats in Bonifacio to get to Santa Teresa, leaving their vehicle at the port of departure. Since the afternoon, Sardinia and Corsica are connected only once a week from Porto Torres.

Ferry breached on rock

Fri Feb 07 23:29:29 CET 2020 Timsen

On Feb 6, 2020, at 11 a.m. the 'Giraglia', serving the route between Santa Teresa and Bonifacio, struck a rock some minutes after leaving Gallura. The hull was breached on a length of eight meters and a width of 40 centimeters. The pumps could cope with the flooding, while the ferry returned to the dock. It was listing to port side, and the 69 passengers and the crew except one officer were disembarked. There were no injuries or oil spills, but the ferry connection between the two islands was suspended, being the only ferry that connects Corsica and Sardinia during the winter months. The ship was sidelined in the port of Santa Teresa di Gallura. Divers were sent down to check the hull. An oil boom was laid out. The accident occurred during the first departure of the ferry after two days of enforced stop due to bad weather, and with the ship being fully loaded with passengers and vehicles. The La Maddalena port authority, which has jurisdiction over Santa Teresa Gallura, immediately began investigating the accident. The crew of the 'Giraglia' spent the night ashore for safety reasons. On Feb 7 technicians were sent from Olbia in order to start repairs to enable the ferry to be towed to Livorno for permanent repairs. On May 1, it was decided that the ferry of the Moby group should not go back into service due to the serious damage such as deep gashes. Moby thus has decided not to carry out the necessary repairs and to put up the ship on sale.
