Tanker saved castaways after hit and run-accident
On July 21, 2017, an unidentified merchant ship was in collision with the Moroccan f/v "Chahid M" in the waters of the Esttrecho, 17 north of Ceuta. The "Salvamar Atria" of the Salvamento Marítimo base in Ceuta responded and saved four crew members and recovered the corpse of the master of the fishing boat. Also the helicopter Helimer 220 of the Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) attended after a distress call was received by the base of Tarifa. The "Chahid" had departed from Tangier and had spent several hours at sea when she was run over and sank. The "Ginostra M" was first on scene and had taken three castaways aboard, and two others, one of them the already deceased master, were floating in the water. All of them were taken aobard the "Salvamar Atria" and transferred to the base at Ceuta where they arrived at around 7.30 p.m., being escorted by a unit of the Maritime Service. The Red Cross attended the rescued fishermen at the base with a psychosocial care team. The deceased was handed over to the coroner for an autopsy.
