162 students and teachers evacuated after grounding
162 high school students and teachers on a school trip were rescued from the Ginga" along with nine crew members after the ship ran aground off the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, on Nov 14, 2012. The accident happened at 3:20 p.m. LT when the 602-ton passenger ship got stuck in shoals about 1.4 kilometers southwest off the coast of Suo-Oshima Town. Receiving request for rescue from the passenger boat, the Coastguard dispatched several patrol vessels and a helicopter for the operation. All the students and teachers on board ship were safely transferred to the nearest port by 6 p.m., there were no reports of injuries. The Coastguard and Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism were conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the accident.
