Ship crew on strike due to unpaid wages
The Philippine 20-member crew on board the "Free Knight" has gone on strike and was preventing the ship from moving from Colombo port, demanding the immediate payment of their wages of some six months according to an official with the International Transport workers Federation. The ship was loaded with about 20,000 tons of rice. It is currently at anchor in out anchorage at the Colombo Port with the crew refusing to operate the vessel. The crew had informed the ITF that the ship owner was in the red of six months wages to the crew and as a result they were preventing the ship from sailing further. The vessel had arrived in Colombo on Jan 16, 2013, coming from a port in Myanmar and was heading for Abidjan. The ship handlers based in Greece have been informed and legal action would be initiated against the owning company if the matter is not resolved at the earliest.
