Cargo ship crew tracked missing fisherman

Wed Dec 14 09:19:45 CET 2016 Timsen

A missing fisherman from Timmendorf upon Poel was found in the late evening of Dec 13, 2016, by the crew of the "André W." off Rerik. The man was reported overdue by relatives in the early evening, and the MRCC of the DGzRS in Bremen alerted the ships in the zone and deployed the lifeboat "Günther Schöps" of the station Timmendorf/Poel, "Hans Hackmack" of the station Grömitz and the "Arkona" of the station Warnemünde. Also the "Eschwege" and "Altmark" of the Federal Police were involved in the SAR operation. The water police Wismar launched a search at the coast. At 7.20 p.m. the "André W.“ tracked a radar echo off the nature reserve Wustrow, but was unable to get closer due to its draught. The fishery protection vessel "Seeadler" headed to the position given by the cargo ship and launched an MOB which found the fisherman. At 7.45 p.m. the "Günther Schöps" took the man aboard, his boat was taken in tow to Timmendorf, arriving there at 9.40 p.m. The f/v had suffered a failure of the engine and the electronic equipment in the afternoon and gone adrift. When darkness fell, the fisherman in vain had tried to attract attention with his flashlight.
