Getan refloated after six days
On Mar 23, 2014, the "Getan" ran aground on the Danube enroute from Regensburg. A first salvage attempt pn Mar 25 failed. The ship hampered the traffic on the river as the bow was stuck inside the fairway. On Mar 29 at 11.30 a.m. the vessel could finally be refloated and was taken alongside the Romanian flagged barge "Athos" as its rudders were damaged. Both ships moored in Deggendorf at 3 p.m. The river closure was lifted at noon.
Getan still stuck at Osterhofen
The "Getan" is still stuck on the Danube at Osterhofen due to the low river tides which have left the ship partially high and dry. Meanwhile the fire rescue and Water Guard are supporting the crew with water and food supplied by the people of Osterhofen. The ship was underway to the Ukrainian port Ismajil, but the ship's master Eugen Kuklanov had been blinded by the sun on Feb 23 at 8.45 a.m. and did not remark an oncoming Dutch vessel. To dodge the ship he turned to the side and ran over a fairway buoy before running aground. The ship made a final turn to starboard before remaining firmly stuck.
