Crew may debark after nine week on sea
After a mission of three months the "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" returned to Wilhelmshaven on April 28, from where she had sailed into the Mediterranean Sea on Jan 17 for a NATO operation. The ship supported the Turkish and Greek Coastguard and participated in the FRONTEX mission, sailing about 22 300 nautical miles. Due to the coronavirus precaution, the crew did not debark since nine weeks. The auxiliary vessel 'Berlin' released the fregate.
Fregate saved 102 migrants
The "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" rescued 102 distressed migrants on Dec 13, 2017. A surveillance aircraft had detected their rubber boat north of Tripoli, and the fregate was directed to the overloaded craft which had 84 men, two women and 15 children on board. They were taken to Messina, the rubber boat was sunk.
Fregate rescued 90 distressed migrants
In the morning of Nov 23, 2017, the "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" rescued 90 distressed migrants from two rubber boats 130 kilometers off the Libyan coast, among them 15 women, 49 children and four toddlers. The "Aquarius" of the NGO SOS Méditerranée supported the operation. The migrants were transferred onto another NGO ship.
