German Navy ship recovered more than 900 distressed migrants
On July 12, 2017, the "Rhine" recovered 919 distressed migrants 50 kilometers off the Libyan coast. They were adrift in seven rubber boats and two life rafts. The ship was tasked to the position 25 miles NE of Zuwara by the EUNAVFOR MED headquarter at 8.30 a.m. and was on scene at 11.30 a.m. The recovery of the migrants, among them 121 women and 203 children, started at noon. A boat of the Italian Coastguard supported the operation and took on board other migrants from NGO ships. After they were taken on board, the "Rhein" sank eight boats as navigational hazards. At 10 p.m. she was released by the On-Scnene-Coordinator and headed to Corigliano Calabro, ETA July 14. On July 13 at 5 pm. one sick migrant along with his wife and their child were medevaced by the Italian Coastguard off Sicily. The German auxiliary ship was involvend in the frame of the EU rescue mission Sophia.
1.181 migrants disembarked in Catania
On April 17, 2017, the "Rhein" disembarked 1.181 rescued migrants, who had previously been saved in the Mediterranean Sea by NGO vessels, and had been transferred onto the auxiliary vessel, were disembarked in Catania.
