Two crew members of capsized survey ship rescued after night in the Northsea

Wed Jul 18 21:06:26 CEST 2018 Timsen

After hours of searching with boats and helicopters, two missing crew members of the "Geo Profiler" were rescued by the DGzRS lifeboat "Theodor Storm" in the Northsea on July 18, 2018, on the Tertius Sand off the coast of Dithmarschen, about ten kilometers from Büsum port. Their ship had capsized due to high swell on July 17 at 8.30 p.m., and the two went overboard. During the night they drifted in the North Sea. The next morning, they managed to reach the sandbar. A large-scale search for the overdue survey ship had taken place in the area of Büsum aand St. Peter Ording up to the Great Vogelsand in the Elbe estuary after the vessel was reported as overdue at 8:25 a.m. by its owner, a subcontractor of an offshore company. The search was coordinated by the MRCC of the DGzRS in Bremen. The lifeboats "Hermann Marwede" of the station Helgoland, "Theodor Storm" of the station Büsum, the "Anneliese Kramer" of the station Cuxhaven and the "Paul Neisse" of the volunteer station Eiderdamm were in action. Also included in the search were a boat of the water police and two survey ships of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency and an SAR helicopter of the German Navy and a tug of the navy. In addition, since the morning all fire brigades on the dike line from the Eider Barrier in Wesselburenerkoog to the spit of Friedrichskoog had been alerted and supported the search from there.
