Bulk carrier damaged by rocket - US strike back

Thu Jan 18 08:49:43 CET 2024 Timsen

The Houthi militia have fired a rocket onto the 'Genco Picardy', en route from Safaga to Tuticorin, on Jan 17, 2024, at 11.11 p.m. in the Gulf of Aden, approximately 60 nautical miles southeast of Aden. The shelling resulted in a direct hit at port side in the accomodation area. There were no injuries. None of the 22 crew members were injured, but a fire broke out on the ship, which was quickly extinguished. The ship was able to continue its voyage on under its own power. The Indian navy diverted the warship INS 'Visakhapatnam', which was deployed in the region, to assist the vessel. A specialist team from the 'Visakhapatnam' boarded the bulk carrier after the arrival on Jan 18 at 12.30 a.m.. The damaged area was thoroughly inspected and rendered safe by te EOD specialists for trasiting to the next port of call. A few hours after the attack on the ship, the US naval force off Yemen launched a major attack on Houthi positions in Yemen. 14 of the Iran-backed militia's missiles that were ready to be used for attacks were hit by the attack.
