Grounding in Çanakkale Strait

Mon Mar 28 19:17:04 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Gelibolu', en route from Iskenderun to Burgas with a cargo of steel products, suffered a technical failure while entering the Çanakkale Strait, and subsequently ran aground at Kumkale at the southern entrance of the Strait on Jan 27, 2022, at 11 a.m. The Coastal Safety tug 'Türkeli' and the lifeboat 'Kıyı Emniyeti 1' as well as a diver crew. On scene were SW winds of 4 Beaufort force. At 6 p.m. the refloating started, and the ship was taken to an anchorage at Akçansa near the Bozcaada Islands. The vessel's transit passage permission was cancelled by the Strait Authority, and the Harbour Master opened an incident investigation file. No pollution and injuries were reported. The extent of damage was unknown at this stage. Class and state surveyors will attend onboard, and divers will carry out an underwater inspection. On March 28 the ship was towed to Akcansa.
