Tanker docked in Hansweert following deadly collision

The "LRG Gas 86" remains docked in Hansweert since Aug 12. The tanker suffered minimal damage in the collision with the yacht "Carnat" at Vlake (Reimerswaal municipality)in South-Beveland. Meanwhile it was found out that the yacht skipper had broad experience as and was fully certified being in possession of license II. The yacht was registered in Ghent and owned for many years by the couple that died. The police interrogated the crew of the tanker. Investigators also have heard several witnesses, including people who were in the vicinity of the accident. Forensic studies were carried out at the tanker and the yacht including operating speeds of the vessels and a blind spot calculation. Both vessels were coming from the Easter Scheldt and were sailing in southern direction onf the canal. The tanker was faster than the yacht. The collision took place on the south side of the Post Bridge where the unloaded tanker hit the yacht with the starboard side bow in its port side aft. After the collision, the yacht submerged. A crew member of the tanker jumped into the water during a rescue attempt. Unfortunately he could not save the victims. However, he fastened a rope to the sunken boat, to prevent the boat would sink further or go adrift. Tanker ran over motor yacht - 2 dead

On the South-Beveland-Canal near the Post Bridge the "LRG Gas 86" overran the Belgian motor yacht "Carnat" on Aug 12, 2013, aroudn 11 a.m.. A couple from Hulst was killed in the accident. The body of the man was recovered around midday by a Team of 18 divers, his wife was pronounced dead in the hospital of Goes. The unloaded gas tanbker was underway to Antwerp.
