German Navy supported Indian Navy in foiling pirate attack

Mon Jul 25 09:49:56 CEST 2011 Timsen

The Indian navy was supported by the German frigate "Niedersachsen" when the "Elinakos" was chased off a skiff with six heavily armed pirates in the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and Somalia. The Indian navy frigate "Godavari" had received an alert from the vessel, which was slow-steaming from Singapore to Italy via the Suez when a skiff approached with pirates armed with RPGs and AK-47s and a boarding ladder. On being approached by the naval boat, the pirates dumped their arms, ammunition and other piracy triggers.

Indian Navy foils pirates’ bid to attack Greek vessel

Wed Jul 20 07:38:57 CEST 2011 arnekiel

An Indian Navy ship has successfully thwarted a bid by Somali sea pirates to seize a Greek ship in pirate-infested waters of the Gulf of Aden, reports said on Friday. New Delhi's Defense Ministry said in a release that the Naval vessel, INS Godavari, readily responded to a distress call from MV Elikanos early on Saturday while escorting four other ships through dangerous waters off the Somali coast. As soon as the Greek vessel radioed for help, a helicopter was deployed on a mission to locate the skiff used by the pirates. Besides a team of Marine commandos was sent out to board the pirate boat. However, on seeing the fast approaching Naval craft, the pirates abandoned the Greek vessel after dumping their arms and ammunition in ocean waters. INS Godavari was assisted in the operation by a German naval ship, The Niedersachsen. After successfully completing its operation, INS Godavari, resumed its escort mission. The frigate has provided safe escort to nearly 219 ships from various countries since its deployment in anti-piracy escort operations on May 25. It had last month escorted a Pakistani vessel, MV Islamabad, with a 38-member all-Pakistani crew.
