Long night for island visitors due to ferry breakdown

Tue Sep 03 18:28:34 CEST 2013 Timsen

The "Cabestan" broke down between southern Newfoundland and St-Pierre-Miquelon on Sep 2, 2013. About 35 visitors who were stranded on the islands were flown to St. John's during the night on Air St-Pierre. Then, they were bused to the Burin Peninsula town of Fortune, where the ferry arrives and departs, to pick up their vehicles. There had been an unknown mechanical problem with the ferry.

The "Le Cabestan" began its first full season offering a service between Fortune and St. Pierre and Miquelon this month. The catamaran replaces the "Atlantic Jet", which operated between Fortune and the French islands until engine trouble put that ship out of commission. The "Le Cabestan" is instead government-owned by the Conseil Territorial de St. Pierre and Miquelon. The ferry arrived in St. Pierre from France in March 2010, and after several months delay made a few runs already last fall. The vessel was scheduled to undergo a routine annual inspection in St. John’s in May 2011, and will then operate until December. The ferry will make the trip between Fortune and St. Pierre Fridays and Sundays until June, with occasional trips on Wednesdays and Saturdays to accommodate students travelling to the French islands.
