Four lost containers recovered

Tue Feb 12 09:34:27 CET 2013 Timsen

On Feb 9, 2013, four tank containers were recovered by the "Argonaute" which had been lost on Feb 6 around midnight from the "UAL Europe" off the British coast while enroute Las Palmas-Antwerp. The CROSS Corsen was alerted and transmitted the information to the British authorities. Simultaneously, the operations center of the Navy (COM Brest) issued an urgent notice to mariners to report the position of the floating containers. In the late afternoon of Feb 7, they were relocated by an Atlantique 2 aircraft of the Maritime Patrol. They had drifted to a position 90 nautical miles west of Ouessant. In the morning of Feb 8, a Cayman helicopter of the French Navy was deployed to place a marker directly on a container which allowed the COM Brest to get the precise location. It sent the "Argonaute" with a team of clearance divers and the marine brigade of the Navy. All containers could be recovered in the late morning of Feb 9. Three of the tank containers were empty and the fourth contained residues of propane gas and was leaking. The "Argonaute" sheltered in the bay of Douarnenez. Following measurements made by the fire brigade, there was almost no propane gas left. On Feb 11 the "Argonaut" headed to port for further processing of the containers.
