Gutted wreck sank
The gutted "Fabrice-Daniel" finally sank on Dec 19. The fire on board the trawler occurred Dec 18 evening. The crew of 4 had just time to send a distress call, before taking refuge in the life raft. The trawler was then about fifty miles north-west of Cape Antifer, near Fecamp. The fishermen were quickly taken on board the "Victor Constant", another fishing boat that was on scene. A lifeboat from Ouistreham remained on site, accompanied by the trawler "Vauban", to deal with the damaged vessel which continued to burn throughout the night. At 6 a.m. the fire seemed to be under control, but then the fire reignited and burnt the polyester hull, as the fuel gradually melted the structure. Short after noon, the "Fabrice-Daniel" sank off Antifer. No recovery operation was to be performed. The wreck, which is lying at 44 m water depth, was not obstructing ship traffic. An investigation was launched by the Coast Guard to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. Trawler on fire
On Dec 18, 2011 at 10:21 p.m., the "Fabrice Daniel" with four people on board issued a distress call reporting a fire on board 28 nautical miles north-west of Antifer. All crew members boarded at life raft. They were quickly rescued by another fishing vessel, the "Victor Constant", also registered in Caen. A second fishing vessel from the Netherlands, the "Simplon", later recovered the raft. Then a loud explosion occurred on board the trawler on fire and heavily damaged the ship's structure. The crew was unharmed but shocked and was treated for mild hypothermia. The Regional Operational Centre for Emergency and Rescue (CROSS) of Jobourg sent a Dauphin helicopter from the Navy Base in Maupertus. The helicopter winched the crew and dropped them at the semaphore of Port-en-Bessin and took on board firefighters. The fishermen were taken to the hospital in Bayeux.
