Bulkcarrier allided with buoy after engine failure

Wed Feb 19 09:19:10 CET 2014 Timsen

On Feb 14, 2014, the "Fu Tong" while entering the port of Santos suffered an engine failure near the Emissário Submarino in José Menino.and allided with a buoy in the navigation channel of Santos while trying to enter port. Two tugs of the Wilson Sons Agência Marítima Ltda. secured the disabled ship and kept it from drifting onto a nearby beach before they took it to the anchorage off Santos where it was waiting for the permission to enter port. The vessel was carrying 60000 tons of soybean which were to be unladed at the TGG bulk terminal. In the afternoon of Jan 17 the vessel docked at Pier 33 where it was to undergo underwater inspections to verify if there was still some cable or chain stuck on the bottom of the vessel. Despite having repaired the propulsion system in the meantime, the ship may not leave the dock until the Santos Navy has certified that she is able to navigate safely. The Port Captain of São Paulo investigated the accident further. Besides the inspection of the vessel, the master and officers were questioned.
