Disabled cargo ship taken in tow
The "Arklow Rival", with a cargo of cement on board, was damaged on Feb 18, 2018, around 10:30 a.m. 50 km north of Roscof, in the English Channel Channel. The ship left Lisbon on Feb 15 and was expected in the port of Sunderland on Feb 20. The Irish shipowner Arklow Shipping first chose to divert one of its sister ships, the "Arklow Rainbow", which was sailing in the opposite direction to Warrenpoint in order to tow the troubled ship. At the same time, the emergenvy tug "Abeille Bourbon", based in Brest, was sent by the French authorities. After unsuccessful towing operations between the freighters, a British tug based in Fowley, the "Cannis" (IMO: 8102141), was called in by the shipowner in the middle of the afternoon, being scheduled to arrive at midnight. In the morning of Feb 9 the "Cannis" was pulling the "Arklow Rival" with a speed of three knots towards Fowey. The ship sailed again on March 31 and arrived off Sunderland on Apr 2.
