Frigate rescued yacht crew off Cape Verdes
On Jan 19, 2024, at 7:34 a.m., the CROSS Corsen received a distress call from the Belgian flagged 14-m-sailing yacht 'Siclades', requesting assistance following the dismasting 120 kilometers off the Cape Verdean coast, the ship had two people of Belgian nationality and two of French nationality on board. At 7:50 a.m., the CROSS Gris Nez took over the coordination of the operation, in collaboration with the MRCC of Cape Verde. The 'Germinal', which was sailing near Mindelo, Cape Verde, as part of Operation Corymbe, received the order to head towards the yacht. At 3:40 p.m., the Germinal arrived in the area and made contact with the four crew members of the ship. Due to the poor weather conditions in the area, it was quickly decided to hoist the four aboard the 'Germinal'. Immediately, a Dauphin helicopter from the Flotilla 35F, which was on board the frigate, took off to intervene. At 6:59 p.m., the four castaways were on board the 'Germinal'. Two of them were slightly injured and cared for by the frigate's medical team. On Jan 20 at 8:30 a.m., the frigate docked at the port of Mindelo, Cape Verde, where the four boaters disembarked.
