Grounded ship monitored while salvage plan was awaited

Thu Oct 21 09:51:33 CEST 2021 Timsen

The Taiwan Coastguard was continuing to monitor the grounded 'Fortune' for possible damage or oil leaks. A plan for refloating the vessel was to be prepared after the weather improved. The 14 crew members who were rescued were taken to a local airport and later to a hospital for COVID-19 testing. The crew had alerted the authorities in the morning of Oct 17 after the ship had lost propulsion and dropped its anchors in a failed attempt to stop the drift.

Disabled container ship drifted aground

Mon Oct 18 10:04:03 CEST 2021 Timsen

The 'Fortune' was disabled by an engine failure on Oct 17, 2021, at 9.25 a.m., en route from Puzhou to Busan, in rought seas about seven nautical miles sotuheast of Jibei Island. The Coast Guard dispatched three patrol boats and a fixed winged aircraft to the ship’s position, but strong winds forced them to turn back. The crew of the freighter attempted to anchor the ship, but strong wind and swells prevented the ship from remaining in a fixed position, and it continued to drift until it ran aground on the northern shoal of Jibei Island at around 3:00 pm. The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to rescue the crew in two batches at 3:59 p.m. and 4:17 p.m. The crew members were flown to Penghu Airport, then sent to a local hospital for PCR testing for coronavirus. The ship was stuck in pos. 23° 45.20' N 119° 37.35' E. On Oct 18 the offshore tug 'Salvage Rover' (IMO: 9257515), was near the grounding site.
