Silver Lake saved man from burning boat

Mon Oct 24 21:34:33 CEST 2011 Timsen

The crew of the "Silver Lake" came to the aid of a fisherman from Byrknesøy whose 31-ft-Sandøy 32 f/v "Henkabuen - SF0040G" (built 1993) went ablaze on Oct 24, 2011, around 1 p.m. 13 km south-west of Utvær in the Sognefjord. Short before finishing his haul he had noticed smoke coming from the engine room which rapidly filled the wheelhouse while the man ran back on deck and put on a survival suit. He sent out a "mayday" and reported that the boat was in the fire. The second vessel to pass was the "Silver Lake", which was heading northward enroute Klaipeda-Vaeroy to load fish. They had seen the burning fishing boat and sent a rescue boat. After the fire had spread to the wheelhouse he had to jump into the sea. The crew of the "Sliver Lake" agreed with Radio Florø that they would fetch him of the sea. During the 20 minutes in the water the boat of the fisherman was engulfed by the flames. The rescue boat picked him up in waves of 3-4 metres height and transferred him to the pilot boat "Los 116" that meanwhile also was on scene. The man asked the pilot boat to take him to Byrknesøy where he was landed two hours later. The lifeboats "Ragni Berg" and "Utvær" kept on monitoring the blazing wreck until it foundered.
