Yacht grounded on Thomas Reef
The F#eur de Passion', en route from Eliat to Port Sudan, with six scientists and four crew members on board, ran aground on the Thomas Reef in the Straits of Tiran in the Red Sea, on the morning of July 21, 2021. The yacht was carrying a pioneering multinational expedition to conduct research into the health of Red Sea corals. The Egyptian navy evacuated the six scientists and the crew to Sharm el-Sheikh. Most of the scientific equipment remained on board the yacht, which was firmly aground, and there were fears it may be damaged if a salvage operation is not completed quickly.
