Wreck traced in 366 metres depth
The wreck of the sunken "Finnøyglimt" was traced in the night of Oct 8, 2011, off Haugesund, but the captain was still missing. Two Polish crew members were rescued. The wreck was found in a water depth of 366 meters north of Haugesund. The search was done with a ROV leased from a private company. Captain missing after ship sunk - search called off
Emergency crews called off the search for the 57-year-old Polish captain of a cargo ship that sunk off Haugesund Friday night. Two other crew members were rescued after being picked up from the sea north of the Ramsholm islands. All three men on board the 48-meter-long vessel Finnøyglimt were from Poland, while the vessel was owned by the shipowning company Ryfylke Shipping. The vessel was normally used to carry gravel. The cause of the accident remained unclear. Emergency crews received a report around 11:30pm Friday that the vessel was having problems in open sea between Slettå and Ramsholmene. The captain reported a several list and contact was lost just 10 minutes later. The sinking “must have occurred extremely quickly,” Johan Mannsåker, leader of the rescue effort, told news bureau NTB. The two surviving crew members managed to don survival suits and get into a life raft. The captain did not. A major search was launched involving a helicopter, dogs and search crews on land, aircraft and speedboats but they could find no sign of the captain. After the “Finnøyglimt" sank enroute Askoy-Husoey off Haugesund on Oct 7, 2011, the chances of survival for the Polish captain were slim. He was last seen on the bridge without a lifejacket, but a survival suit at hand. Two Coast Guard vessels, a lifeboat and several merchant vessels were still searching for the man as well as police on land. A helicopter from Stavanger took part in the search earlier in the night, but had to take a break early Oct 8 morning. He was relieved by an ambulance helicopter. The search would last throughout the day.The accident took place between the Slettå and Rams islands, near the county boarder of Bergen and Stavanger. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was notified that the ship had problems at 11.38 p.m, three minutes after the captain had notified that the ship was listing and initially was contacted Rogaland radio Kvitsøy after they noticed the ship had made a sudden turn back to Haugesund. But there was no response apart from the emergency call at 11.38 p.m. At 11.40 p.m. the EPIRB was activated and the ship already in process of going down 700 metres off the shore. The two other Polish crew members who were rescued by a passing merchant ship at 11.55 p.m. still had managed to put on survival suits and get in a raft. The vessel was used to transport gravel and crushed stone by the company Ryfylke Shipping. The ship had loaded crushed rock and gravel at Helle, Forsand in Ryfylke on Oct 7 at 3 p.m.. The wreck is lying about 370 meters deep. There may be around 30 tons diesel fuel on board. The ship has run aground twice in the past, on Dec 12, 2007 and on Aug 11, 2009.
