Car carrier saved single hand sailor

Mon Apr 07 22:45:19 CEST 2014 Timsen

A Canadian yachtie whose boat overturned in the South Pacific Ocean five days ago and started sinking has been rescued by the "Fidelio". The sailor was picked up in the evening of Apr 7, 2014, after a joint effort by an air force Orion and the "Fidelio". The "L'Antillaise" was hit by a storm, causing it to roll over and start leaking. The single Hand sailor had been trying to pump the water over but activated a distress beacon when his bilge pump failed. The Orion was sent to the scene, about 1100 km south of Rarotonga and 2300 km northeast of Auckland, as was the "Fidelio", which was diverted 370km to the scene. After finding the boat, the Orion directed the vehicles carrier to the position, and it battled 25 knot winds and big swells to help the sailor to climb aboard. In an amazing effort the master and crew of the "Fidelio" were able to rescue the skipper at night, in high winds and rough seas. The sailor had suffered only superficial facial injuries. He was expected to arrive in Auckland aboard the "Fidelio" on Apr 10.
