Container ship diverted from Ashdod, Force Majeure declared

Thu Oct 19 09:49:21 CEST 2023 Timsen

The container shipping company Evergreen is now canceling calls at Israel's largest and most important deep-water port, Ashdod with reference to the ongoing hostilities between Hamas and Israel. The ships are diverted to Haifa instead. The 'Ever Cozy' was supposed to call at Ashdod on Oct 17, 2023,, but for safety reasons the shipping company decided to declare Force Majeure and divert the ship to Haifa, because the situation in Ashdod was affected by events beyond the control of the company. The containers that were destined for Ashdod have now been unloaded in Haifa, and after a declaration of Force Majeure, it was now up to the shippers to ensure that the containers reached the right destination. It is the first time that Force Majeure has been declared in connection with calls to an Israeli port after hostilities broke out on Oct 7. The somewhat smaller port of Ashkelon, which is very close to Gaza, has been closed since the conflict broke out.
