Drifting ferry damaged frigates in Keelung

Mon Jul 31 09:30:19 CEST 2017 Timsen

The typhoon Nesat which swept across Taiwan broke the "Nathan Rera" off her moorings at the East-3 wharf in Keelung. She went adrift and struck the Knox-class frigate "Lan-Yang (蘭陽)" of the Taiwanese navy which were docked ahead of the ferry in the evening July 29, 2ß17, at 11.41 p.m. One minute later the ferry further also allided with the frigate "Huai-Yang (淮陽)", which was docked alongside the "Lan-Yang". An investigation has been launched into the incident. Navy personnel aboard the "Lan-Yang" found a one-meter-long crack on the port side of the stern that led to the ship taking on water. The crack was patched within 30 minutes, thanks to the crew's quick response. The "Huai-Yang" suffered a large dent at the stern as well as five broken railings on the main deck's port side. The warships could be fully repaired in two weeks and the Navy will assess the cost of repair before seeking compensation. Both the Knox-class frigates serve in Navy Flotilla 168, which is based in Su'ao but will seek shelter in Keelung Port when a typhoon sea warning is released. The "Natchan Rera" suffered far more severe damage as a result of the collisions, with holes punched into her hull. The ferry usuakky plies between Su'ao in Yilan County and Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, and between Taipei Port and Pingtan in China's Fujian Province.
