Bulkcarrier taken to Chalkis port

The "St. Gregory" which had run aground in the Laconian Gulf at Kokkala beach on June 7, and which was lightered on Gythio anchorage since June 21, berthed at the Chalkis Shipyard S.A. on Oct 21 at 10 a.m. She left the yard again on Nov 24 and moored on Constanta anchorage on Nov 28.

After the "St. Gregory" was successfully refloated, she was taken to Gythio anchorage, north of the grounding site, and brought to anchor. As of June 21, the general cargo vessel "Meerdijk" was at her side, seemingly moored, and two tugs. Most probably, a lightering operation was under way. The master, one officer and two deckhands had been detained, suspected for negligent navigation, which led to the grounding.

Four crew members arrested after grounding

Four crew members of the "St. Gregory", the captain, the chief mate and two more sailors, were arrested on June 8 the basis of Article 277, 278 of the Penal Code, for negligence during navigation and endangering people. They were taken to the Gouthiou Primary Prosecutor's Office. So far no marine pollution has been observed in the area where the ship ran aground, while oil booms have been installed for preventive purposes.
