Largest ship ever in Newcastle upon Tyne
The "Alam Penting" on Aug 4, 2011, became the largest cargo vessel to ever dock on the River Tyne at North Shields coming from New Orleans. It is the largest cargo vessel to berth and carrying 75,000 tonnes of coal it is the biggest volume handled on the river. This was only possible after Port of Tyne deepened the river to 13-metres to allow for such vessels to dock. The "Alam Penting" arrived at the mouth of the Tyne at 2 p.m., making her approaches to the piers on the high tide and is expected to berth at 8 p.m.
