Authorities seek compensation for repair costs

Thu Nov 15 18:07:15 CET 2018 Timsen

Local authorities were looking to request compensation from the Oldendorff Carriers GmbH & Co., the shipping company of the "Erna Oldendorff", regarding the repair costs for the damaged bridge and water pipes. The total cost for the restoration was currently estimated at around about $24,589,983. However, due to the limitation of liability, it was unknown how much compensation can the affected prefectures receive. On Nov 9, the captain of the bulk carrier was fined approximately $4,389 by local authorities, due to the damage that the Oshima Bridge sustained after the vessel allided with it. The ship berthed at the Chengxi Shipyard Co. in Jiangyin on Nov 7.

Documents of three crew members handed over to the prosecutors

Mon Nov 05 12:01:02 CET 2018 Timsen

The documents of three crew members of the "Erna Oldendorff" have been handed over to the Yamaguchi District Public Prosecutors Office, as they were facing charges on negligence, after the vessel allided with the Oshima Bridge. The captain reportedly admitted that he was unable to verify the height of the bridge before the collision. He supposedly asked the second mate to confirm the measurement, but it was too late, and the vessel allided with the Oshima Bridge. The "Erna Oldendorff" arrived at Etajima on Oct 28.

Bulkcarrier allided with bridge

Mon Oct 22 09:04:20 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Erna Oldendorff" allided with the Oshima Bridge which is connecting Yanai city in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, Honshu, with Suo-Oshima island in the Inner Japan Sea, on Oct 22, 2018, at 12.30 a.m. The bulkcarrier was en route from Qingdao to Kure. The ship continued its voyage and dropped anchor in pos. 34° 14.33' N 132° 30.74' E on the Yanai anchorage for a further assessment by the Japanese Coast Guard. The radar mast on the bridge and three cranes on deck were damaged. The bridge remained open for traffic, but a water pipe under the bridge broke, leaving nearly 15.000 islanders in Suo-Oshima without water supply. A 250-meter section of the pipe had fallen into the sea. Officials set up an anti-disaster team and sent water trucks to 16 locations. TV and internet fiber glasss cables were also torn apart.
