Cargo ships in collision in Porto Nogaro

Wed Mar 01 10:09:19 CET 2017 Timsen

In the morning of Feb 27, 2017, the unloaded "Erdogan Senkaya" was in collision with the "Luca S" in the Magreth port of Porto Nogaro. The Turkish vessel entered port to load a cargo of steel, while the "Luca S" was already moored at the dock and ready to start discharging a cargo of silica sand. During the mooring maneuver, the "Erdogan Senkaya" lurched into the starboard foreship of the "Luca S" with its bulbous bow, tearing a big hole into the ship which started to take on water immediately. Fortunately the water remained confined inside of the ballast tank so there was no risk of sinking. The crew balanced the vessel by the filling of other ballast tanks and the speedy unloading of the load, thereby restoring the correct trim and getting the gash above the water. The Coast Guard of Porto Nogaro intervened with two teams, a patrol boat and a shore patrol to perform the first surveys, monitor the development of events, adopt all necessary measures to ensure the safety in port and preventing possible pollution. The Office of the District Maritime launched an investigation into the accident.
