Collision off Salina
The "Nadir", coming from Capo D'Orlando with 350 daytrippers to the Aeolian Islands on board, collided with a 20-meter yacht from Campania with a crew of five on board off Salina on Aug 20, 2019, at 11.30 a.m. The bow of the passenger vessel was breached as well as a part of the port side hull. The yacht was taken to Lipari, and the "Nadir" was escorted to Santa Marina Salina upon Salina island. The yacht which remained fairly navigated was diverted to Lipari where the Coast Guard awaited it. Five passengers on the passenger ship were injured, one of whom who was seriously injured at the head was transported to Messina by helicopter. He had already been assisted by a doctor and a nurse who were on board as passengers. The others were taken ashore by the Coast Guard patrol boat "CP 322" and medicated in the Lipari emergency room with minor injuries. According to initial investigations of the Coast Guard, the ferry did not give way to the yacht and thus caused the collision. The yacht with five tourists from Salerno on board was headed to Filicudi, the "Nadir" was enroute to Salina. The Public Prosecutor of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and the Maritime District Office of Lipari launched an investigation against the ferry crew.
