Mutineers facing high prison sentences
After the mutiny on the 'VOS Pace', the ship remained stationary in Puerto del Rosario on Oct 5. The crew of the ship had rescued a group of about 80 migrants Moroccan Sea within the area of its Rescue Service. The captain informed the MRCC in Rabat and received instructions to take the rescued people to the port of Tan Tan. On the way to the port city in southern Morocco, the ship picked up another 35 occupants of a second boat. Shortly afterwards the captain warned on the radio that some migrants became very aggressive after hearing that they would be landed in Morocco, and not in the Canary Islands, which was believed to be their destination. The migrants indicated that they did not agree with that decision and tried to overpower the crew, threatening them with knives. The captain then decided to quickly change course to Fuerteventura and hand over the nine migrants to the Spanish Guardia Civil. He handcuffed them in the night of Oct 2 on suspicion of mutiny. The other rescued migrants also eventually disembarked there. There was no criminal investigation against them. The Spanish authorities have taken care of these people. In Spain and Morocco, high prison sentences are imposed for attempting to hijack a ship.
Mutiny after rescue operation
Nine migrants have been arrested on suspicion of mutiny on board the 'Vos Pace' which had recently rescued 79 migrants in the Atlantic Ocean. The 'Vos Pace' had sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, en route from Agadir, where it had left on Sep 29, after encountering two distressed migrant boats in the evening of Oct 2, 2023. After the castaways were rescued by the offshore vessel, it set course for the mainland. The crew reported to the Spanish authorities that there was an emergency on board, after it became clear that the ship was returning to Tan Tan in Morocco and not to one of the Canary Islands. The crew was allegedly threatened with knives. It was then decided to change course to Fuerteventura and hand over the nine migrants to the Spanish Guardia Civil in Puerto Rosario on Oct 2. The Guardia Civl then arrested them for mutiny. The other migrants also eventually disembarked in the port. VOS Pace on maiden voyage
We are pleased to announce that our newly delivered VOS Pace has today left COSCO Guangdong Shipyard on her maiden voyage. VOS Pace is the first of six PX121-type PSVs being built at the Shipyard for Vroon. The vessels will be delivered to the company during 2015 and 2016 and are intended for operation in European waters. They will be managed by Vroon Offshore Services in Den Helder. The Ulstein PX121, with 850 m2 deck space, is an X-bow design which ensures reduced and smoother vessel movements in harsher conditions. This provides better operational and fuel-efficiency advantages to the charterer, in combination with high crew safety and comfort standards. Source: Vroon
