Emelie D back in homeport
The "Emilie D“ was returned to its homeport Haren by the owner on Jan 22. The shipping authority in Meppen had given an exemption permission for the transfer. The ship was now to be repaired.
Damaged barge released by prosecutor
In the afternoon of Jan 18 the detention of the "Emelie D" in Surwold was lifted by the prosecutor in Osnabrück. Due to the severe damage the ship, however, was unable to leave for the time being. The 28 year old deckhand was interrogated by the police on Jan 18. He stated that he was in the wheelhouse jointly with the 60 year old master at the time of the accident on Jan 16 at 8.20 p.m. The ship had left Bremerhaven ih the morning and was bound to Dörpen with eight empty containers. On the Coast Canal the ship had the wheelhouse down most of the time. It was dark and foggy. A distance off the bridge near Surwold the wheelhouse was raised to have a better overview when passing another ship. It was then lowered again, but stil to high when approaching the bridge, thus hitting it. The deckhand warned the master and threw himself onto the floor. After the accident he first treated the life threatening injured master before issuing a distress call and then manoevering the barge into the port of Surwold where the rescue service treated the master before taking him to the hospital in Papenburg where he succumbed to his injuries some hours later.
Master killed in bridge allision
The "Emelie D", 1603 ts (EU-No.: 02314780), allided with the bridge "Im Eichengrund" over the Oldenburg Coast Canal in Surwold, Emsland county, on Jan 16, 2017, at 8.20 p.m. The wheelhouse was torn off destroyed, the master suffered life threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital where he died later. A 28 year old crew member managed to manoever the ship to a berth 2,5 kilometers further in Surworld where rescue services were able to board it and recover the master. The barge was loaded with eight containers and had enrotue from Bremerhaven to Dörpen. At the time of the accident it was very foggy, and possibly the master had not lowered the wheelhouse before passing under the bridge which was also heavily damaged and barred for traffic. Ship traffic on the canal was not hampered, but had to reduce speed when transiting the accident site as it could not be ruled out that debris was lying on the canal bottom.
