Sick captain medevaced by helicopter

On Dec 25, 2023 at around 2 a.m., the 'Embla R' reported an medical emergency on board about 2.5 nautical miles southeast of the small Baltic Sea island of Greifswalder Oie.. The crew of the lifeboat 'Berthold Beitz' of the DGzRS station Greifswalder Oie Station was mobilized to assist sick captain, who urgently needed medical attention. Despite adverse conditions with wind speeds of seven Beaufort and wave heights of three meters, the lifebaot managed to go alongside the dredger on the first attempt after arriving on site half an hour after the distress call, and transfered two sea rescuers to provide first aid. The captain was temporarily unresponsive. Also a rescue helicopter from Northern Helicopter was alerted and arrived just a few minutes later. It first placed an emergency doctor on the dredger using a cable winch. A little later it picked up the captain in the same way and flew him to the hospital.
