The 'Elysium', which has been in drydock in Sotogrande undergoing repairs since September 2024, caught fire after workers had clocked off for the day on Dec 16, 2024, at around 6.30 p.m. Flames soon ripped through the fibre-glass vessel as firemen, Guardia Civil and port workers battled throughout the night to contain. Firefighters resorted to blasting the flames with foam in order to bring it under control. The ship had eight tonnes of diesel fuel on board. No people had been on board the ship’ at the time of the fire. The last of the flames were finally extinguished on Dec 17 at around 5 a.m. The Guardia Civil and San Roque local police evacuated the yard and restricted street access after the fire broke out.
