Ship exceeded loading line, master arrested
Officers from the Port Authority of Thessaloniki arrested the Master and the second Master of the 'Elreedy Star' for disrupting the safety of water transportation at the port of Thessaloniki ine morning of Nov 24 2023. During an inspection in the port, it was found that the loading line of the vessel had been exceeded. The Port Authority of Thessaloniki, which was conducting a preliminary investigation, banned the vessel from sailing and imposed the prescribed administrative sanctions.
Stowaway disembarked in Mombasa
A stowaway who was arrested on the 'Elreedy Star', heading to Mundra, risked a long jail term after pleading guilty to being on the vessel illegally. Salim Mwinyi Mananda, 38, was arrested while attempting to sneak out of Kenya. He boarded the vessel on Sep 3, 2022, at around 3 p.m. through the gangway in Mombasa at berth number 14 and then hid in a life boat. The crew discovered the stowaway on Sep 4 at around 6.30 a.m. when the vessel had just cast off heading to India. They removed and escorted him to the Mombasa Port Police Station. Mananda told the Mombasa Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku that he was fleeing Kenya for a better job opportunity in the Asian country. He was charged with failing to report his departure to the nearest immigration officer and being on the ship without authority, contrary to Section 364(a) of the Merchant Shipping Act of 2009. Mananda will be sentenced on Sep 15.
Disabled cargo ship towed to Zeebrugge
The "BBC Ostfriesland" suffered steering failure while en route from Castellon to Zeebrugge in rough seas around Feb 2, 2016. The owner contracted LOF Multraship Salvage BV and Smit Belgium with the salvage, and the ship was subsequently taken in tow and arrived at Container Handling Zeebrugge on Feb 9 at noon.
