German shipper sentenced to $800,000 penalty in Puerto Rico
U.S. prosecutors say a German shipping company has been ordered to pay a $800,000 penalty for breaking environmental laws and attempting to conceal pollution from a container ship that stopped in Puerto Rico. The U.S. Attorney's Office says Uniteam Marine Shipping GmbH was sentenced in federal court on the U.S. island for making false statements and violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships. The investigation began last year after the company's 603-foot (184-meter) MV CCNI Vado Ligure vessel arrived in Puerto Rico. Investigators found oily bilge water was dumped overboard through a hose that bypassed pollution prevention equipment.
