Ferry crew rescued capsized canoeist

a man who had capsizes with a canoe was saved by the crew of the 'Elio'on Aug, 28, 2023, at around 8 a.m. in front of the Ringo promenade amid the strong gusts of mistral winds in addition to the always very strong currents. The crew of the ferry on its return trip to Messina, sighted the man in distress, slowed down t and immediately lowered a rescue boat. The crew also notified the Port Authority, and the Coast Guard sent a patrol boat which embarked the man and took him ashore in good condition.

Boatswain killed by mooring line

A 61-year old boatswain of the 'Elio' was killed by a mooring line in the morning Feb 24, 2021, when the ship was docking at the port of Messina. Gaetano Puleo was taking care of the docking operations of the ship at the Norimberga pier when, from the first reconstructionsm it seemed that he was overlooking a opening and as soon as the mooring line went under tension, without breaking, it hit him violently. The man fell into the sea where his body was later recovered by his colleagues. He was not supposed to be on duty this morning but had replaced a colleague. Sefine Shipyard hands over ELIO to Caronte & Tourist

The LMG Marin-designed 133.6m long and 21.5m beam ELIO has been delivered by Sefine Shipyard to Caronte & Tourist. The double-ender has meanwhile left Yalova for the Messina Strait.
