Rescue ship seeks shelter in Pozzalo
The "Eleonore" with 104 distressed migrants, who had been saved from a sinking boat one week ago, on board was heading towards the port of Pozzallo on Sep 2 due to a severe thunder storm in the region despite the refusal of Italian authorities. The castaways were without any shelter on the deck of the rescue ship so the captain Alaus-Peter Reisch declared an emergency. The financial administration has ordered the precautionary seizure of the "Eleonore" after its arrival in the port of Pozzallo. A patrol boat joined the Mission Lifeline ship on its way to the port where it was detained.
Malta turned down request to disembark 100 migrants
Malta has turned down a request from the "Eleonore" for the disembarkation of 100 rescued migrants. The ship had made two requests to enter Malta but both had been refused. In addition to refusing the ship to enter its ports, the Maltese authorities had also denied the ship permission to restock food and water. A government spokesperson said that the vessel was free to receive supplies outside territorial waters if it wished to do so.
NGO ship rescued 100 distressed migrants
On OAug 26, 2019, the "Eleonore", which had started its rescue mission in the Mediterranean Sea on Aug 24, rescued about 100 distressed migrants off the Libyan coast from a sinking rubber boat. Most of them were transferred on board by the ship's RHIB, some had to be taken off directly as time ran out. A patrol boat of the Libyan Coastguard threatened the crew and closed in until 50 meters. Finally all could be pulled aboard. German report with photos: https://mission-lifeline.de/aktuelles/erster-einsatz-fur-eleonore/
