Wreck still drifting on air bubble

Thu Nov 28 11:43:27 CET 2024 Timsen

On Nov 25 at 4.41 p.m. the 'El Cañavera', that sank an hour earlier just over a mile east of Punta Candieira, stopped transmitting AIS signals. On Nov 26, it was still half-sunken, with its bow sticking out of the sea. If there were no changes, a decision was to be made on Nov 27 on what to do witt the vessel. The Ferrol Maritime Authority has specified that the measures to be adopted depended on the weather conditions, which were not favourable Due to the risk it poses to navigation, the area where the wreck was drifting, has been marked by the 'Condesa Pardo de Bazá' from the Cedeira Red Cross. The fishing boat has not sunk because an air bubble has formed inside it. The owner can take charge of the wreck by presenting a salvage plan and, if necessary, a towing plan, presumably through the insurance company. If not, the public body will take charge, which initially planned to try to tow it to an area closer to the coast. The crew of the 'El Cañavera' attributes the shipwreck to a leak that they were unable to control.

Fishing vessel sank, crew rescued

Wed Nov 27 09:41:04 CET 2024 Timsen

On Nov 25, 2024, the 'El Cañavera', with four crew members on board, suffered a leak and started sinking 1.3 nautical miles from Punta Candelaria. Upon the distress call of the fishermen, the CCS Fisterra of Salvamento Marítimo mobilized the SAR helicopter Helimer 401, the SAR boat 'Salvamar Shaula', the LS 'Pardo Bazán' of the Cruz Roja and issued safety warnings. The f/v 'Brisas de Cedeira' (MMSI: 224015930), which was nearby, located the raft, into which the crew had saved themselves, and picked up the castaways. They were taken to Cedeira. The 'El Cañavera' meanwhile went down stern first. Report with photos: https://x.com/salvamentogob/status/1861088695375294598
