Tank barge aground on the Rhine
On Aug 4, 2016, the "Eiltank 47" ran aground on the Rhine at Braubach near Koblenz. A container barge started a salvage attempt at the tanker which was loaded with 1070 tons hazmat goods, but in the first attempt the wire broke. While it was still being discussed to lighter the cargo, the container barge managed to pull the ship off in the second attempt. After investigations the "Eiltank 47" continued the voyage from Ludwigshafen to Amsterdam where it berthed on Aug 5 at 6.15 p.m.
Master found guilty of illegal degassing, but no penalty
The captain of the "Eiltank 47" was found guilty of degassing his ship on Jan 30, 2012, but was not punished. The ship had unloaded the highly toxic and odorless adiponitrile in Antwerp and then sailed to the ATM for degassing. The captain said he had then anchored at the Moerdijk bridges to ventilate the tanks. An investigating officer remarked a strange smell and heard a blowing sound. Although he could not prove that the toxic substance was being discharged he made a police report. If there was no degassing certificate issued by ATM then the degassing of the vessel was prohibited. The prosecutor demanded a fine of 1,000 Euros. The magistrate, hhowever, had difficulties with all presented protocols and laws so he made no penalty.
