Man fell over board and died between two barges
In the morning of Jan 24, 2014, divers of the fire brigade Duisburg recovered the body of a 67-year old Romanian man who had worked aboard the Swiss flagged tank barge "Piz Bianco" (EU-No.: 07001801) in harbour basin B near the Coal Island in Meiderich. He was stuck between the "Eiltank 113" and the "Piz Bianco". The man belonged to a team of three which had been doing repair work aboard the barge and was last seen on Jan 23 at 9.45 p.m. by his colleagues. When he did not come to work the next morning, his colleagues started a search and found him entangled between the two ships. They immediately notified the police who in turn called the fire rescue. It was thought the man slipped over board from the deck. An autopsy was to be carried out on Jan 27 in Duisburg. The tank barge has just been sold from its owners, the Oel Pool AG in Busch, to Nigerian buyers.
