Grounding on the Wester Scheldt
On Apr 20, 2016, at 7.45 p.m. the “Sea Horizon” ran aground on the Hoofdplaat on the Western Scheldt off the Pas van Borsselen. The accident happened at low tide between Flushing and Terneuzen while the ship was proceeding up the river bound to Antwerp with almost 39000 tons of gasoline on board. The ship had sailed from Port Neches on Mar 31. Four tugs of Multraship from Terneuzen and two of Kotug Smit were called to assist and refloated the tanker which had a draught of 11,7 meters and had got stuck with the foreship with the rising tide around 11 p.m. The ship was taken back to the Wielingen-North anchorage near Flushing off the Flamish coast, where she was moored around midnight for Surveys. The “Sea Horizon berthed in Antwerp on Apr 21 after surveys were completed, and left the port again on Apr 23 at 8.45 p.m. The ship dropped anchor at West Hinder Anchorage in the early morning of Apr 24.
