Barge refloated after two weeks
The "Jess", 1266 ts (EU-No.: 02310489), which had run aground on the Danube on July 31, 2019, was refloated on Aug 14. The ship which was loaded with 1.000 tons salt had got stuck on the right river embankment oppsite of the island Windorf without hampering passing ship traffic. It was hoped that it might get off unassisted with a rising water level of the river. But on Aug 13 the barge suffered water ingress in the engine room. At the same time the water level rose, and the salvage was initiated by the relevenat river authority along with the fire brigades Windorf, Vilshofen and Hofkirchen which attended with three boats and four vehicles. Oil booms were laid out to contain oil in case of a leakage. Forces of the Technical Suppport Work (THW) drained the engine room. Then a Dutch barge took the casualty in tow and pulled it off. At 2.30 p.m. the "Jess" was floating again. At 6.45 p.m. it was towed into the port of Passau for investigations. Barge aground on sand island amidst the Danube since weeks
On Jan 17, 2019, the "Jess", 1266 ts (ENI-No.: 02310489), ran onto the small sand island Helemba on the Danube. The unloaded ship had sailed from Vienna on Jan 15 and was sailing downstream towards Baja, when it veered off course due to a technical malfunction of the rudder gear and ploughed across the shallow between Esztergom and Szob. The vessel did not hamper passing ship traffic, but due to falling water levels on the river half of the ship was resting high and dry on the sand meanwhile, and there was little to do but to wait for the rising tide. Part of the crew has been evacuated, but some remained on board to guard the ship and keep robbers away. They had to be supplied by boats in the middle of the river.
