Castaways dropped off at Mooloolaba Harbor

Fri Sep 08 12:26:23 CEST 2023 Timsen

Three round-the-world sailors reached land safely on Sep 7 after sharks nearly sank their catamaran in the Coral Sea. Both of the inflatable hulls on their 30-foot cattamaran 'Tion' were damaged in several attacks by cookiecutter sharks. The boat was nearly submerged and a front section of one hull was completely missing. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority coordinated the rescue of the two Russian and one French sailor after they activated the EPIRB on Sep 6 about 519 miles southeast of the Queensland state city of Cairns. The three were rescued by the 'Dugong Ace', which landed them at Mooloolaba Harbor on the Sunshine Coast north of the Queensland capital Brisbane, while the vehicles carrier continued on its way to Mokpo with an ETA as of Sep 16. Three circumnavigators rescued off Cairns

Wed Sep 06 10:26:53 CEST 2023 Timsen

Three circumnavigators got into distress, after sharks bited holes in the inflatable 9-m-catamaran 'Tion'. Skipper Evgeny Kovalevsky and his two crew members were surprised by sharks in the night of Sep 5. They were evacuated to safety by the 'Dugong Ace' in the early morning of Sep 6, 2023, off the coast of Australia. The two Russians and a French national had sailed from Vanuatu through the Coral Sea to Cairns on Australia's east coast. About 835 kilometers from their destination, cigar sharks attacked their catamaran "Tion" and bit holes in both hulls. At around 1:30 a.m. they sent out an emergency signal. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) became aware of the emergency and asked the crew of the nearby "Dugong Ace", en route from Port Kembla to Brisbane, to assist. The castaways were due to arrive in Brisbane on Sep 7.
